I read the book this weekend! Well, and it impressed me more than i expected, in fact. Another thing to be mentioned is the second title of the book - The Omega Man, having the meaning "the last man" - very conceptual, isn't it?
Now, some words about the content and the message of the book. The story unflods in the 70s of the 20th century (the book was written in 1953, by the way). An unknown virus was spread rapidly and turned the people into vampires. Well, I think there is no need to retell the plot, as any of you can read the novel by yourself (it is quite short, by the way). What really needs mentioning is the idea being expressed by the author: the norm is defined by the majority, and Nevill, being the last healthy man on the Earth was not normal. He used to kill the infected, family by family, in the daylight, and after dawn they found their friends, relatives and children dead and these were painful losses for them, just like it could be for any human beings.
That's why the ill were afraid of him, hated him and caught him finally to put him to death, as there was no place for Robert Nevill in the future state of the infected people.
Was it a bit of intrigue? Then read the book, it's worth it!
